Metrolog X4 i-Robot is perfectly suited for industrial applications requiring flexibility and productivity, while at the same time providing high metrological accuracy. The measuring accuracy is fully independent of the robot’s own positioning precision, as the measuring device is tracked independently. Metrolog X4 i-Robot is directly connected to the robot PLC controller, such that all robot movements are perfectly synchronized with the measurement activity. This means the robot trajectory is entirely controlled by a standard Metrolog X4 part program, and can instantly take account of alignment conditions.

How Does It Work ?

Metrolog X4 i-Robot is typically based on a high speed acquisition laser scanner attached to a multi-axes robot wrist. The robot, of any type or brand, and without specific accuracy, behaves like a simple tool holder. The measuring accuracy is provided by a separate tracking system (cameras or laser tracker) which continuously tracks the actual location of the measuring sensor in space. This means the positioning accuracy of the robot is not critical, as its position can be adapted "on-the-fly" according to the sensor location.

The main applications can be found in the automotive, aerospace and their sub-contractors for the manufacturing lines metrology control.

No Robot Programming Necessary

Metrolog X4 i-Robot directly handles robot motions and inspection commands in one single part program. This means the robot is programmed directly through Metrolog X4 i-Robot (or offline using Silma X4), without any need for specialist programming of the robot itself. Any trained inspector or CMM programmer is able to program Metrolog X4 i-Robot directly, without any prior knowledge of the workings of robot PLC's.

Inspection programs can be easily modified, just like a CMM, without the interaction of a robot programmer. No other robot based inspection system is this easy to program !

Complete Flexibility

The solution can integrate additional robot cell axes such as 7th axis rail, rotary tables, or even multiple robots and measuring devices.

An Independent Metrology Chain

The measuring accuracy of the complete system is totally independent of the robot’s precision, eliminating the effects of robot drift, warm-up, backlash, etc.

This independence also negates the need for laborious, non-productive cyclic robot calibrations.

Perfect synchronization between measurements and robot

Programming with Metrolog X4 i-Robot is no different to programming a traditional CMM, apart from the fact that the CMM looks different. Simplified programming of the robot trajectory can be achieved directly from the CAD, with the software providing the ideal orientations of the robot axes.

Programming can be performed "on-line" at the robot, or alternatively in off-line mode using Silma X4, presenting massive time-savings for production applications. As is often the case, part programs need modifying from time-to-time, and this is easily achieved by updating the sensor location and robot positioning directly through Metrolog X4 i-Robot.

Robots provide a fast, lean manipulator for many types of measuring devices.
